Processes

A system has been described as “a network of functions or activities within an organisation that work together for the aim of the organisation".*

For most organisations, the boundary is usually the organisation itself but, equally, it could be an industry sector or a division or function within an organisation.

The objective of a management system is to create win-win situations throughout the system.  Effort should be spent on optimising the system and the system should focus on the customer in accordance with the organisation's aim.

Developing a systems approach to managing an organisation has the benefits of:

  • defining the organisation's aims and objectives;
  • focusing effort on the customer's requirements;
  • ensuring that there are no “gaps” in the organisation;
  • allowing best practice to be shared; and
  • providing a platform for continual improvement.
