The Rothamsted Institute

The Rothamsted Institute www.rothamsted.ac.uk is the largest agricultural research centre in the United Kingdom and, almost certainly, the oldest agricultural research station in the world.

Rothamsted has built an enviable international reputation as a centre of excellence for science in support of sustainable land management and its environmental impact.  The scientific research undertaken ranges from genetics, biochemistry, cell biology and soil processes to investigations at the ecosystem and landscape scale.

Statius, having previously worked with the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) www.nerc.ac.uk, was asked by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRS) www.bbsrc.ac.uk to work with the Rothamsted Institute on their march towards the prestigious and internationally acknowledged environmental management standard ISO 14001.

Matt Lear of Statius conducted a gap analysis over the summer of 2008 and Mark Woods is now very happy to report that, following a meeting with both the Rothamsted and BBSRC teams on 8 January 2009, go ahead was given to execute the recommendations made in the gap analysis and to aim for assessment to the 14001 standard early next year.
