Background

Grenco UK has been operating in the UK since 1967. The company being the result of a merger between FES International Ltd and Grenco in March 1999.

At that time, all of the Grenco UK Ltd operational activities were moved to Biggin Hill from its original site in Camberley. The same year, registration to ISO 9001 was gained with BVQI.

At the later time of acquiring Morris and Young Ltd, a long-standing supplier of air conditioning systems installations and heat-pump products, Grenco UK Ltd changed its trading name to Grenco Refrigeration Ltd.

Project

Having seen the benefits of how Morris & Young had previously used Statius to develop their ISO 9001 management system and how they had been encouraged to comply with the Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER), via Module H1, Grenco UK Ltd were keen to pursue a similar approach with a view to simplifying their own management systems and significantly reducing costs.

As a result, Statius was appointed to develop an integrated management system for the newly merged Group. The scope of works included the head office and the five regional services centres across the UK and Ireland, two of which held design responsibility under the requirements of the PER.

The project came in before time and on budget and culminated in an integrated assessment against an integrated system meeting the requirements of both ISO 9001 and module H1 of the PER.

The assessment was conducted by NQA and Zurich Risk Services and the company passed at the first attempt.

The Benefits

Under the previous regime the company where having to appoint the services of a notified body for each of the, approximately 30, new installation projects undertaken each year. This added both cost and delay. Employing the approach advised by Statius led to the following benefits:

• The elimination of notified body involvement eliminating delays and saving circa £2k per installation; circa £60k pa.

• The development of a robust in house design capability

• Increased staff involvement and increased understanding of company, team and individual objectives.

• Increased efficiency and consistency.

• Simplified processes with significantly reduced costs
