Integrated management systems for a lift company
The Jackson Lift Group first engaged Statius to work on their ISO 9001 management system in 1992, since which time we have worked together to develop and refine their integrated management systems to encompass ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, ISO 50001 and the Lift Regulations.
The lift industry has been subject to increasing compliance issues over the years for instance; the legal requirement to comply with the Lift Regulations, the LEIA (trade body) requirement to comply with initially the ISO 9001 quality standards and then the equivalent health and safety standard and the requirement for companies over 250 staff to comply with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS).
Jackson’s are seen by many in the industry as the “Rolls Royce” of independent lift companies and, as a direct result of the initial Jackson’s commission, Statius now enjoys an unrivalled reputation in this sector and is easily market leader.
The Group, established by George Jackson in 1979, has rapidly grown to become one of the largest independent lift company in the UK with head offices in London and regional offices in Bristol, Ferndown, Glasgow, Lichfield, Newcastle and Manchester. The activities of the Company encompass the full range of lift services; in any one year the Company installs around 50-60 new CE marked lifts in accordance with the Lift Regulations, services over 20000 lift “units” and undertakes about 10000 repairs.
The approach and the solution
The initial commission, in 1992, was to assist the service company prepare for, and obtain, the then BS 5750 quality management standard. After an initial diagnostic, a plan of work was developed and accepted. The original goal was to complete the work and gain registration within 12 months; in fact, the project was completed in 10 months and under budget – no mean achievement!
The two companies have continued to work together to develop the quality systems; for instance completing the registration of the installation company to ISO 9001 and the upgrading of the management systems in both companies to the 1994, 2000, 2008 and 2015 revisions to the 9001 standard.
As the company has expanded through a series of regional offices other standards have had to be incorporated into an increasingly integrated management system. Initially the environmental and health and safety standards ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001, but also, as a result of environmental and EU pressure and the ESOS regulations; ISO 50001, the energy management standard.
All standards have been achieved at the first attempt and usually with the need to address just a small number of minor non-conformance's.
The “champion” of the original, and all subsequent, projects was the then project manager, now Company Director, John Clarke. Totally organised and totally committed to quality, John recently commented that “Statius has assisted us in providing long-term beneficial improvements to our business …. they work with us to ensure we keep abreast of current and future issues.”.
